The Diva Dirt Writers’ Choice Awards 2011: Promotion, Independent Match & Televised Match of the Year

Diva Dirt presents the first annual Writers’ Choice Awards, the awards that celebrate the year in women’s wrestling, as decided by the editors and contributors of Diva Dirt. The Diva Dirt team has watched hundreds of episode of wrestling television this year, as well as hundreds of live events on DVD, additionally, we’ve followed a countless number of wrestlers over the year, and reviewed tons of matches. Now, as we come to the end of 2011, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice blue ribbons.

How it works
Based on the nominations for the fan-voted Year-End Awards, each writer was asked to make their pick for a select number of categories. Seven team members took part and the majority vote for each category determined the winners.

The results of the Writers’ Choice Awards will be published in three blocks over the next week.

Please note: The Writers’ Choice Awards are not the results of the fan-voted Year-End Awards. The Year-End Awards voting is still open until December 31st and the results of your vote will be published on January 1st, 2012.

Video Exclusive: Alicia Talks War Games Match and Feud with Jessicka Havok

WSU’s icon, Alicia, spoke to Diva Dirt this past Saturday at Breaking Barriers 2 just hours ahead of the grueling six-woman War Games match inside the steel cage.

Neither the fans and Alicia alike could prepare for how the night would end as the Midwest Militia brought a machete into the ring and threatened the life of Mercedes Martinez, while Alicia and Brittney Savage lay prone, handcuffed to the ring ropes.

In this interview, filmed prior to that fateful main event, Alicia talks about the match and her fierce rival, leader of the Midwest Militia, Jessicka Havok.

WSU iPPV Notes: Melina’s Attitude Backstage, Mercedes Injured & More

A lot of buzz still surrounding last night’s WSU Breaking Barriers 2 Internet pay per view. If you missed the show, you can catch a replay at this link. For full coverage of the iPPV click here.

* We have some exclusive pictures of Melina, Serena and other WSU stars posing with one of our t-shirts here.

* For those wondering, I’m told that Melina was a complete pleasure to work with and came to WSU with no airs & graces. Everyone we’ve heard from had great experiences with Melina. She was very sociable with everyone. The roster wants her back.

* WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez suffered a stinger during the steel cage War Games match. She had to be taken to hospital. No ring time is expected to be missed, just bruises & bumps which should heal over the next several weeks. All the best to Mercedes!

* Breaking Barriers 2 was the most purchased WSU iPPV to date, I’m told. The pre-orders exceeded pre-orders for past events. Just judging by the reaction on Twitter and the traffic that our live coverage was getting, this seems to make sense. We had more traffic for the live coverage than any other WSU iPPV, which suggests that there was more awareness about this iPPV than the ones in the past. Kudos to WSU and all involved because the promotion for this iPPV was vast & it looks like it paid off with more people purchasing and generally knowing about this show compared to past events.

* The next event is a joint show with NWS in January. The main event for the WSU side will be Traci Brooks vs Jillian Hall with Molly Holly serving as special guest referee. Also, a 5-on-5 tag match is booked as the Boston Shore, Sassy Stephie, Allysin Kay & Tina San Antonio face the Soul Sisters, Alicia, Brittney Savage & Marti Belle. That show is on January 21st.

* WSU has uploaded a lot of videos featured during the iPPV to its YouTube channel. Below you can see one of Steven’s backstage interviews representing Diva Dirt.

* Don’t forget: I’ll be joined by WSU promoter Sean McCaffrey on Wednesday’s debut edition of DD360 at 9pm ET. He’ll be giving us a lot more fallout from Breaking Barriers 2, including the decision to put Dixie Carter in the WSU Hall of Fame.
