On the April 29th, 2013 episode of WWE RAW, in Women’s Wrestling action was Brie Bella taking on Naomi. Also on the show, was a dance-off between Fandango and Summer Rae versus The Great Khali and Natalya.
The Bella Twins were seen backstage, as Brie Bella warmed up. The Twins mentioned not being in last week’s Battle Royal, noting that they were too preoccupied on the red carpet of E’s Upfront event in New York City, promoting “Total Divas” (WWE Divas reality show “Total Divas” set to air on E!). Nikki was mentioned to be taking on Naomi, however, it ended up being Brie…
WWE Divas – April 29, 2013 RAW Match:
Naomi vs. Brie Bella
—After commercials, The Bella Twins were seen in the ring. We then got a promo video of “Total Divas.” The Funkadactyls then made their way to the ring. As the bell rang, we got a tie-up, followed by Brie slamming Naomi to the mat twice. Naomi got some strikes to the gut of Brie, and got her offense going. It proved too much for Brie, who retreated to ringside. The Bellas were able to make a switch, and Nikki rolled-up Naomi for the win. …
After the match, Cameron protested to the referee. The referee then disqualified Brie and named Naomi the winner. This infuriated The Bella Twins, and they took out their frustration on The Funkadactyls.
Winner: Naomi by disqualification
WWE Divas – April 29, 2013 RAW Segement:
The Great Khali & Natalya vs. Fandango & Summer Rae – Dance-Off
—Fandango and Summer Rae made their way to the ring first for this Dance-Off, with Natalya and The Great Khali already in the ring. Jerry Lawler did some introductions, and the contest was on its way. Natalya and The Great Khali went first, followed by Fandango and Summer Rae.
Based on the crowd reaction, Natalya and The Great Khali won, which led to Fandango laying out The Great Khali.
—Also on the show, was a segment with the WWE Divas Champion Kaitlyn where she was confronted by AJ Lee. The segment led into Kaitlyn receiving a present from a secret admirer…
Thoughts: The backstage segment with the Bellas was a nice lead-in to the match, as with the promotion of “Total Divas.” The match on the other hand left a lot to be desired. For a 3-hour show, these girls could have been given more time to work the match. The referee reversing the decision was a nice touch, as with the post-match beat-down. Could we be seeing a bit more of The Bella Twins versus Funkadactyls? With AJ Lee now the #1 contender for the WWE Divas Championship, it would make sense…
Kaitlyn and AJ Lee’s backstage confrontation was done really well—which was more of a highlight than the Divas match. Kaitlyn was great at delivering her lines, and AJ was priceless with her reactions. The segment helped build some tension between the two; however, the writers need to give us more. Unless the secret admirer angle ties into the feud, it seems like a distraction.
As for the dance-off, it was ridiculous in every way, but let us not forget the “Entertainment” part in sports-entertainment. Summer Rae is not the best dancer, yet she fits the gimmick. And of course we would like to see Natalya’s in-ring prowess on Raw. However, at least she is being used on a regular basis, unlike the likes of Alicia Fox, Layla, and Tamina.
